Dharma bell at Unmunsa Temple in korea

Temple life is a stark contrast from life at home or visits at hotels. One must learn to act with restraint when staying at a temple. Temple life teaches people how to achieve true happiness by breaking free of one’s habits and attaining enlightenment. By observing a few guidelines, visitors can enjoy a meaningful and pleasant temple stay.

Here are a few tips to remember:

-Visitors should put others’ interests before his or her own.
-After rising, one should make his or her bed quietly and neatly.
-All visitors should rise for the early-morning ritual service.
-As in Korean custom, visitors should refrain from blowing one’s nose loudly.
-When using the bathroom, take care to wash your face in a quiet and composed manner.
-Avoid wasting water since it is a limited resource.
-Overnight visitors should bring their own toiletries, since many temples do not provide these items.
-Wear comfortable and clean clothes.
-Always wear socks within the temple.
-Refrain from extraneous chatter.
