Many Buddhist participate in Temple stay during their vacations.
-When entering or leaving a temple, one should take each step in full awareness. This will calm the distracted mind.
-When entering the temple, guests should lower their heads and gaze. If one sees insects crawling on the ground, one should take great care to avoid inadvertently killing them.
-Guests should always move along the right side in temples, since this action represents deep reverence for the Buddha.
-When paying homage to the Three Jewels of Buddhism, one should always recall the following: Buddha is the one who attained enlightenment, Dharma is the way to enlightenment, and Sangha is the community of people studying Buddha’s teachings.
-Refrain from bringing knives and miscellaneous personal belongings to the temple. Discarding knives and other such items is symbolic of releasing anger or animosity one may harbor towards others. Leaving behind miscellaneous belongings is symbolic of relinquishing the greedy wishes one may seek from Buddhism’s Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. Only after abandoning these items is one ready to enter the temple.
