Many of the traditional temples in Korea offer some sort of program for lay practitioners of all walks of life. Programs range from short term monastic experience to one week summer camp style temple stay.
Careless acts may disturb those engaged in self-reflection and meditation at the temple. While most people have an understanding of temple etiquette, the following tips may assist visitors or new practitioners:
-Guests should refrain from wearing provocative clothing and excessive jewelry. -Avoid wearing cologne or perfume to the temple. -Guests should not smoke or chew gum on temple grounds. -Tourists should refrain from excessive photography at the temple. Refrain from taking photographs of Buddhist statues inside the temple halls. -Guests should turn off cellular phones before entering the temple grounds. -Unless one has received advance permission from a head monk, guests should refrain from bringing food onto the temple grounds. -Avoid bringing pets to the temple area. -Guests should wear comfortable shoes to the temple. Take great care to avoid making noise when walking.
