Though one may conquer a thousand times a thousand men in battle, yet he indeed is the noblest victor who conquers himself.   (Dhammapada: The Thousands)
Introduction
Great Buddhist Masters

For me, my masters have been the embodiments of living truth, undeniable signs that enlightenment is possible in a body, in this, in this world, even here and even now.... masters are for me the embodiments of my sacred commitment to keep enlightenment foremost in my mind until I actually achieve it.
  Sogyal Rinpoche

The Buddha, Dharma and Sangha are the three great jewels or triple treasures of Buddhism. As outstanding representatives of the Sangha, Buddhist Masters are true, sparkling gems in the Buddhist treasure trove. Sakyamuni Buddha was the first great master but many other masters have served as the lifeline of Buddhism by teaching Buddhist doctrine and cultivation techniques to successive generations. Great Buddhist Masters not only teach Buddhist doctrine and meditation, they embody the Buddhist teachings and illuminate the Buddhist path with every thought and action. Great Masters are considered living examples of the Dharma.

Progress on the Buddhist path involves more than acquiring knowledge or honing new skills. Masters must help students discover the wisdom within. Fortunately there are many ways or paths that lead to your inner wisdom or Buddha nature. Buddhist Masters have marked these trails for us with their words and actions.
